Oyako Donburi recipe … oh how I love you. The sweet and salty taste of the donburi is the one of my most favorite recipes from very own retired chef (i.e. father-in-law).This post contains affiliate links/ads. Seedisclosure/privacy policy.

When it comes to Japanese foods, nothing beats the good, old fashion oyako donburi recipe.

It is just my most favorite Japanese food of all time. It’s not widely-known to many people but I am pretty sure you’ll love this food once you have a taste of it.

The Oyako Donburi, or some Americans say Chicken Katsu Donburi, is often served at restaurants in individual bowls. That’s a typical scenario but it doesn’t always have to be served individually.

Oyako Donburi or known in Japan as Oyakodon is cooked in a single pan where chicken, egg,s and onion are simmered in a special donburi sauce recipe (i.e. the main ingredients for that special sauce is soy sauce and sugar).

It is a simple, yummy, and very affordable dish that can be cooked within 30 minutes. Yes, you can make this restaurant-quality dish in under 30 minutes.

Of course, if this is your first time doing this recipe, it may take you a couple more minutes to create one. But don’t worry though because once you nail the recipe, you can easily make this in no time.

In our house, my father-in-law creates a big batch and he places the food in a rectangular-shaped pyrex (as seen in the image below). It’s easier to serve this way that it is to serve it in individuals bowls. Because this is served during parties, it is easier to make it in a batch.

Just a little background on the name of the recipe. Oyako means mother and child. This is why the main ingredients for this dish are chicken and eggs.

Super Yummy and Easy Oyako Donburi Recipe (Oyakodon) - (1)

I never had this recipe or even had a bite of this dish until my father-in-law created one when he first came to the US to live with us.

The dish was perfect. The aroma was just something that made me hungry in a matter of seconds.

Without any further ado, here is the Oyako Donburi recipe. I hope you like it as much as my family likes it. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3/4 lb. skinless, boneless chicken breast halves cut into strips
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1cup chicken broth
  • 2 1/2 tbsp white sugar
  • 4 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • strips of Nori

Equipment:

  • Pan

Instructions:

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over a medium-high heat. Saute chicken strips and onion for about 8 minutes or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked.

Stir in the chicken broth, and simmer for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the sugar, soy sauce and salt. Simmer for 3 minutes. Add (by sprinkling in) half of the green onions. Make sure the green onions are spread out evenly.

Pour beaten eggs on the chicken mixture. Simmer until the eggs are thoroughly cooked, about 8 minutes. Serve on top of the recently-made rice. Cut Nori into thin slices and spread throughout the dish.

Optional: Sometimes, my father-in-law would add mushroom (sh*take mushroom for better taste. If none is available, then button mushrooms are fine) and carrots (julienne cut). The mushroom adds a nice flavor while carrots add crunch to the dish. If you prefer to add these ingredients, you need 7 mushrooms (sliced into strips) and 1/2 cup of carrots (julienned).

You would need to add the ingredients after chicken broth has simmered for 2 minutes and before you put the sugar, soy sauce, and salt.

That’s it.

Final thoughts:

Whether you prefer serving this dish individually in a bowl or a pyrex, you won’t make a mistake on impressing your loved ones. This dish is just perfect even with simple ingredients, which you can easily find in your pantry.

Enjoy and have a great meal! If you wish to use beef or vegetables instead of chicken, you certainly create beef donburi recipe or vegetables donburi recipe less the chicken. You just have to follow the same procedures described above.
