What does everyone recommend for fluid in a manual 3 speed? Any advances in modern days?

I have used plain old gear oil for years without any trouble. I buy whatever is on sale. These transmissions don't need exotic additives. All the oil needs to do is keep the gears lubricated.

That's what I am used to also, the reason I ask is my 1969 F100 is dripping "RED" fluid out of the rear seal. I bet the PO used ATF in it !!! Manual 3 Speed Fluid - The FORDification.com Forums (4)

If it shifts and sounds okay, drain it as fast you can and throw the right grade of hypoid in there. Leave it overnight to fully drain if you can. I wouldn't bother cleaning it out or rinsing it to get the last of the ATF out - I'm not sure there's any benefit. The next fluid change will pretty much do that.

I bet the inside of your transmission is awful clean Manual 3 Speed Fluid - The FORDification.com Forums (7)

Thanks Jack, I have it on the top of the "To Do" list for this weekend. How difficult would it be to change out that rear transmission seal?

IIRC, on my Ford 3.03 with long bed and 2 pc drive shaft, just remove the front drive shaft (unbolt the u-joint and carrier bearing) and pinion yoke (1 big nut), pry out seal and tap another in. Be sure and re-torque the pinion yoke nut. I like to use a 3"-6" piece of large PVC pipe with an end cap on it to drive in seals around shafts.

Use the recommended lubricant as stated in the owner's manual.

Orrrr... you can use 40W non-detergent motor oil. O'Reilly's can get it for you, usually in a day or so. It's the Borg-Warner recommendation for the T-85 3spd-OD, both cases, and works just fine in any older manual transmission.

Non-detergent oil is used in applications not involving combustion of gases, as with an internal combustion engine. So a transmission qualifies.

Any particular brand you are fond of?

I use the O'Reilly non-detergent 40W in my T-85-OD's. It's worked just fine for years and rolls good when cold.

Hope this helps!
